The Definitive Collection of Utility Providers by State

When moving, one of your top priorities is connecting with the local utility providers. In addition to electricity, your new home might require natural gas, propane or heating oil services. Many utility companies are also offering options for renewable energy, such as solar, water and wind power. Most utility services companies simply require you to provide a service address to start an account, but you may have to pay a deposit if you are a new customer or have a poor credit history, notes the Federal Trade Commission.

Communities are usually tied to specific utility companies that have set rates and plans. However, more than 500 cities in 18 states have chosen to fully or partially deregulate the electric and natural gas industry, giving customers a choice of suppliers and services. With the exception of California, Oregon, Texas and Georgia, deregulated states are concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast. When shopping for a new energy provider, you'll choose between paying a fixed kilowatt charge during an agreed term or a variable rate that fluctuates with the market price.

There are vast price differences in how much energy costs throughout the nation. According to an analysis from WalletHub, the lowest rates are found in Washington at an average of $218 per month due to an abundance of hydropower. The District of Columbia, Colorado, Oregon and Arizona also benefit from low energy prices. Connecticut residents pay the highest monthly rates at an average of $404 but are closely followed by Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont and Georgia.

The wide price variance is driven by availability of and access to natural resources, infrastructure, policies and regulations. Consumption demands for heating and cooling in extreme temperatures also influence monthly costs. Locations with nearly year-round warm weather, such as South Carolina, Hawaii, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida, pay the highest monthly electricity bills despite having some of the nation's lowest total energy costs per kilowatt. Customers in major urban areas tend to pay more than residents in less densely populated areas throughout the rest of the state.

When it comes to cleaner energy sources, you'll find the lowest natural gas prices in Idaho, Nebraska, North Dakota, Colorado and Indiana. Massachusetts is the highest ranked in the nation for offering the best energy efficiency programs. Several states have made a concerted push toward supplying solar power, including Arizona, Nevada, New Jersey and North Carolina. Despite being the nation's largest market for energy, California consumes the least amount of energy per capita. This sunny state is the leader in residential solar power, generating enough energy to supply 3.3 million homes.
