How to Pick an Interstate Moving Company

Whether you're moving ten miles or a hundred, making that transition is never a simple process. When looking for interstate moversto help you get resettled, it’s important to find a service you can fully trust—not just a moving company, but a partner.

Compare Pricing

Many people consider pricing before anything else when choosing a moving service, and for good reason. You’ll want to ensure the interstate moving company you choose fits your budget and provides the services you need at an affordable price. Don't be afraid to call around and ask for a few quotes so you can compare pricing before moving forward.

Get References

Once you find an interstate moving company you think could be a good fit, ask for references from the company. These references will give you peace of mind and help you make the best decision. Check customer reviews and testimonials, both on the company’s website and elsewhere.

Pay Attention to the Fine Print

The last thing you want to do is pay a hefty surprise deposit or deal with a higher bill than you expected. The price you agree to should be the price you pay.

Ask for Verification

Legitimate interstate moving companies must be issued a license from the Department of Transportation. DOT certification ensures that the interstate mover's trucks, vans, and other vehicles are held to the highest standard. If a moving company can't provide this certification, it means they aren't licensed by the Department of Transportation.

Consider Insurance

Always ask the interstate moving company for proof of insurance and auto liability coverage before signing a contract.

Full Range of Tailored Services

Don’t allow your mover to charge you for services you aren't going to use. Professional interstate movers should always provide a comprehensive range of services you can pick and choose from. This allows you to create a custom approach to your move, saving you time, money, and stress.

At North American Van Lines, we provide custom services that can be tailored to meet your specific needs. Whether you need help moving fragile items into your new place or only want a hand during the unpacking phase,we’ll provide whatever level of assistance you request. It’s your move, your way.

5 Tips for a Successful Interstate Move

Choosing the right moving company and services for your interstate move is just part of the picture. Use these tips tohelp your move go as smoothly as possible:

  • Declutter. It costs money to move things, so cut down on the number of things that need moving! Donate or sell items you no longer use. Consider using Craigslist or a neighborhood app to hand off furniture and other large items you don’t want to take with you. This tip not only lowers your cost of moving, but might make you some cash that will come in handy during your interstate move.
  • Itemize and organize. About 6–8 weeks before your interstate relocation, go ahead and pack up items you won’t need until after the move, such as photo albums, off-season clothes, books and decorative items. Label each box clearly, including the room and contents. Packing in advance will give you a better idea of what additional boxes and packing materials you’ll need, allowing you plenty of time to order them.
  • Prepare for your new home and clean the old one. Four weeks or so before moving day, arrange to have the utilities and cable turned off at your old home and turned on at your new home. If you rent, do some deep cleaning as you pack so you have your best chance at getting your deposit back.
  • Close accounts, transfer mail and service the car. A week or two before moving day is a good time to cancel your local gym membership and other local accounts and memberships. You can also go ahead and fill out the mail forwarding form at the post office or online. If you’ll be driving your car during your interstate move, have it checked and serviced as needed to make sure it’s ready for the trip.
  • Pack valuables and necessary items for the move. If an item is small, fragile or very valuable, we recommend you personally transport it to your new home. Pack your jewelry and antiques and plan to take them in the car with you, if possible. Anything you or your family will need while on the road should be packed and carried with you as well.

An interstate move is no time to leave tasks until the last minute. These tips will help you prepare for your move in a manageable and systematic way. Need more help? Interstate Moving FAQs

What is an interstate move?

An interstate move is a relocation from one state to another. Such relocations are primarily regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

How much does an interstate move cost?

The best way to budget for your interstate move is to get a quote. Many factors go into how much a move will cost, including how much of the packing you opt to do yourself, whether you need storage, and how many other services you need. North American Van Lines offers everything from fragile-only packing to full-service packing. We also offer specialty packing materials for purchase, so you can do your own packing if you choose. Our wide selection of interstate moving services and options allows you to tailor your move to your budget and needs.

How long can I expect my interstate move to take?

Like the cost of an interstate move, the duration can also vary. Generally, though, it will take 2–5 business days to move your household belongings across the country.

Are your interstate moving services available anywhere in the country?

Yes! Not only do we have moving agents throughout the U.S. who can help with your interstate move, but we also work with trusted third parties when necessary. You’ll always have local movers to help you with the process of an interstate relocation when you choose northAmerican.
