What a Move to Methuen Has to Offer
Methuen, a city with roughly 47,000 residents, sits on the Merrimack River in Essex County, Massachusetts. As with much of Massachusetts, the city has a rich historical heritage with nearly 45 listings on the National Register, including many houses, the Spicket Falls Historic District, the Arlington Mills Historic District and the First Church Congregational, which is a Gothic Revival-style church that features the work of noted American stained glass artist John LaFarge.
The Methuen Memorial Music Hall, designed by Henry Vaughan, architect of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., was built in 1909. It contains a landmark organ designed by the E.F. Walcker Company of Ludwigsburg, Germany, believed to be the largest organ in the United States at the time of its import. The Music Hall was expressly designed to house the instrument, and its soundproof walls, up to 3 feet thick in some places, are in the cross shape of a church. The 65-foot high vaulted ceiling gives tremendous reverberation to the space. The Hall currently features concerts in the spring and summer and can be rented for private use.
Today, Methuen offers a safe community with crime rates much lower than the national average. Housing costs are lower than the average for Massachusetts while the median household income is higher than the rest of the state. Being only about 28 miles from Boston, commuters can find a peaceful and quaint lifestyle at home in Methuen.
The proximity of Boston gives Methuen residents easy access to all the advantages of a big city, including shopping, higher education and cultural pursuits. There is no shortage of other exciting outings to be had for residents with Newburyport, Gloucester and other beaches nearby for summer fun and the ski resort of Vermont and New Hampshire just a short drive away.
