What a Move to Branford Has to Offer

Branford, Connecticut, is a town located on the southern shore of the state in New Haven County, with roughly 28,000 residents. The area of Branford was originally a Dutch trading post around the mouth of the Branford River where the Dutch traded with local Indian tribes. However, many people believe the name Branford was adapted from the town of Brentford in England. Officially established in 1644, the town grew slowly, and by the 1800s, a small shoreline settlement existed in what is now the Stony Creek area. In the mid-1800s, the railroad brought businesses and vacationers to the area, and the town became a seaside resort. About 20 hotels opened, and their business lasted for approximately the next 100 years.

Today, Branford is home to Durata Therapeutics, 454 Life Sciences and other pharmaceutical and high-tech firms. American Polyfilm and Wilson Arms, a firearms manufacturer, also have facilities in Branford.

Branford has seven large population centers, which are Pine Orchard, Indian Neck, Stony Creek (which includes the Thimble Islands), Branford Center, Branford Hills, Short Beach and Hotchkiss Grove. Within these, five historic districts are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Branford Point Historic District, the Branford Center Historic District, the Canoe Brook Historic District, the Stony Creek-Thimble Islands Historic District and the Route 146 Historic District. Separately, more than 20 houses and other properties are also listed, including the Harrison House and Museum, built in 1724, which today houses local archives, historical items of interest and period furnishings.

Cruises to the inhabited Thimble Islands leave from the Stony Creek dock, and in March there are seal-watching cruises. There are a number of public and private beaches in Branford along with trails and marinas tracing the 20-mile shoreline.
