What a Move to Iron Mountain Has to Offer

Iron Mountain is located in the southern part of the upper peninsula of Michigan and is close to the Michigan-Wisconsin state line. Named for the iron ore that was mined in the area during the late 1800s and early 1900s, this town is also a neighbor of the Pine Mountain Ski Jump, which is known for being one of the largest artificial ski jumps in the world.

Other points of interest in Iron Mountain include the Millie Hill Bat Caves and the Cornish Pump, which are both related to the iron mining operation that provided the name for the town. Environmentalists in the area appreciate that the Mille Hill Mines, abandoned during the 1930s, currently serves as a hibernation location each winter for as many as 50,000 bats. Engineering and history enthusiasts alike will appreciate the museum surrounding the preservation of the Cornish Pump, the largest steam-driven pumping engine in the U.S., which was originally used to remove much of the water from the swampy areas where the original mines were drilled.

According to the 2010 U.S. Census, Iron Mountain is home to 7,624 people, with a diverse mix of families and singles, households with children under the age of 18 and households with seniors only. Designated a “Michigan Main Street” community, this small town appeals to both families and business owners and manages to attract a fair amount of visitors each year for its historical relevance and easy access to outdoor recreational opportunities. From skiing and sledding trails in the winter months to hiking and walking trails in the summer, Iron Mountain offers plenty of activities to enjoy all year long.
