What a Move to Waterford Has to Offer
Waterford is a town of roughly 20,000 residents on Connecticut's southern shore in New London County. It's bordered on the western side by the Niantic River and on the eastern side by the Thames River and by neighboring New London.
Originally a part of New London, Waterford split from the port city in 1801, after absorbing Scottish, Welsh, Italian, Russian and Irish immigrants. Throughout most of its early history, Waterford was mostly an agricultural community, but later granite-quarrying became part of the local economy. Granite from Waterford has been used in many famous American projects, including the foundations of the Statue of Liberty and Fort Sumter.
In the twentieth century, dairy farming began to take root in Waterford, and over 100 dairy farms were established in the town, many of which still stand today.
The earliest-known school building in Connecticut, the Jordan Schoolhouse, is located in Waterford on Jordan Green. It dates back to at least 1737 and functioned continuously as a school until 1979. Today, it is a museum open to the public. Other famous sites in Waterford include the Seaside Sanatorium, a medical facility designed by noted architect Cass Gilbert, Mago Point, the home of many marine-based businesses including fishing tackle shops and dockside restaurants, and Connecticut College Arboretum, a nature preserve. Harkness Memorial State Park encompasses the grounds and mansion of noted philanthropist Edward Harkness, and residents can feel free to tour this scenic locale.
Waterford is also the site of the Waterford Speedbowl racetrack, which is recognized by NASCAR. It hosts races throughout the year, including the Valenti Modified Racing Series, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and the Friday Night Sho N' Go drag racing series.
