What a Move to Wilton Has to Offer

Wilton is a town of roughly 18,000 residents in the southeastern corner of Connecticut, in beautiful Fairfield County, part of an area known as the Norwalk River Valley. Prior to 1802 Wilton was a part of Norwalk, and in the Revolutionary War the British encamped here after their raid on nearby Danbury. Their forces burned a few homes, but the town was left mostly unharmed. Due to strong local anti-slavery convictions, the town later became a regular stop on the Underground Railroad.

Today, Wilton enjoys a reputation as a well-cared-for and successful community for many commuters to New York City, a sizable portion of whom work in the financial services sector. More than 500 extant 18th- and 19th-century homes have been restored, and most command high prices on the real estate market. Many of them can be seen on scenic Ridgefield Road. At the same time, the town has taken action to preserve natural lands, spending $23 million between 1999 and 2005 on associated municipal bond offerings.

There is a reservoir owned by the Norwalk power company on the western side of town, with 350 acres of adjacent land where deer hunting is allowed, but only with bows and arrows, rather than firearms. Norwalk River Valley Trail, a multi-use trail that will eventually link Norwalk and Danbury, has recently been expanded in Wilton.

Wilton was rated one of the top 25 towns in which to live in America by CNN. The town's neighborhoods include Georgetown, Cannondale, Wilton Center, Gilbert Corners, Silvermine, South Wilton and North Wilton. Wilton is the headquarters of Cannondale Bicycle Corp., toymaker Melissa & Doug and pet food manufacturer The Blue Buffalo Co.
