Located in northeast Virginia, Woodbridge is a cozy town with a population of about 4,000 residents. It is just 20 miles south of Washington D.C. and is bordered by the Potomac and Occoquan rivers. Woodbridge has two major shopping centers, including the Potomac Mills Mall and the Potomac Festival Shopping Center. Woodbridge is near several outdoor recreation areas, including the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The refuge features a long shoreline where a variety of wildlife, especially birds, can be seen. Picnic areas, grills and other amenities are located on the premises, and visitors regularly see bald eagles and other birds, depending on the season. There are also hiking trails throughout the park. Leesylvania State Park is another beautiful outdoor recreation area in the region on the Potomac Bay. Its beaches are great for kayaking, canoeing and fishing. With a scenic picnic area, the Leesylvania State Park is admittedly small for a state park, but a fantastic place to spend a leisurely afternoon. Woodbridge also has several golf courses, including the Ospreys at Belmont Bay, which is considered one of the most challenging golf courses in northern Virginia. It has fast greens, unpredictable winds and deep ravines, and its beverage cart and other amenities help ease the play.
Named after a 1795 wooden toll bridge over the Occoquan River, the town is home to two buildings on the National Register of Historic Places that include the Freestone Point Confederate Battery and Rippon Lodge.
