According to Pew Research, over 22% of Americans moved in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 alone — a 9% increase from pre-pandemic levels. Housing prices, interest rates, and the rise of remote work have furthered the trend of interstate relocations, as reflected in our 2023 Migration Map. No matter how you look at it, Americans are on the move.

Choosing the Best Interstate Moving Company

Whether your nearest state line is hundreds of miles away or right down the street, you deserve the best relocation services available — but how to choose? When comparing interstate moving companies in your area, keep the following considerations in mind to ensure you find the perfect match.

Compare Pricing

Make sure each interstate moving company can provide the services you need at an affordable price. Start with a list of the services you’ll need, such as packing, auto shipping or appliance setup. Don't be afraid to call around and ask for a few quotes so you can compare pricing before moving forward.

Get References

Once you find an interstate moving company you think could be a good fit, ask for references from the company. Good references can provide the peace of mind you need to make an informed decision. Check customer reviews and testimonials on the company’s website and elsewhere.

Know the Pricing for Your Interstate Move

The last thing you want to do is pay a hefty surprise deposit or deal with a higher bill than expected. Read the contract thoroughly to check for hidden fees or inconsistencies in pricing. Look for bottom-line pricing, not-to-exceed pricing and customized pricing — pricing models that let you determine the final price in advance. Don't hesitate to ask your relocation specialist which pricing model fits your interstate move best.

Ask for Verification

Legitimate interstate moving companies must be issued a license from the Department of Transportation. DOT certification ensures that the moving company’s trucks, vans and other vehicles are held to the highest standard. If a moving company can't provide this certification, they aren't licensed by the Department of Transportation to transport your belongings across state lines.

Consider Moving Valuation

Always ask the interstate moving company for proof of moving valuation coverage before signing a contract. The best interstate moving companies will offer comprehensive coverage for all your possessions.

Full Range of Tailored Services

Don’t allow your interstate mover to charge you for services you aren't going to use. Professional interstate movers should always provide a comprehensive range of services you can use to create a custom moving plan, saving you time, money and stress.

At North American Van Lines, we provide custom services that can be personalized to meet your specific needs. Whether you need help transporting bulky or fragile items or only want a hand during the unpacking phase, we’ll provide whatever level of assistance you request. It’s your move, your way.

5 Essential Tips for a Successful Interstate Move

Choosing the right interstate moving company to assist with your relocation is only half the battle. You’ll also want to start taking practical steps to make the moving process as simple as possible. Efficient planning and preparation will make the transition significantly more streamlined and less stressful.

Here's how to get started:

  • Declutter. It costs money to move things, so cut down on the number of things that need moving! Donate, sell or dispose of items you no longer use. Consider using Craigslist or a neighborhood app to hand off furniture and other large items you don’t want to take with you.
  • Itemize and organize. About 6 – 8 weeks before your interstate relocation, go ahead and pack up items you won’t need until after the move, such as photo albums, off-season clothes, books and decorative items. Label each box clearly, including the room and contents.
  • Prepare for your new home and clean the old one. About four weeks before moving day, arrange to have the utilities and cable turned off at your old home and turned on at your new home. If you rent, do some deep cleaning as you pack to secure your best chance at getting your deposit back.
  • Close accounts, transfer mail and service the car. A week or two before moving day is a good time to cancel your local gym membership and other local accounts and memberships. Fill out a mail forwarding form at the post office or online. If you’ll be driving during your interstate move, have your vehicle checked and serviced as needed to make sure it’s ready for the trip.
  • Use our expert packing tips and checklists. At North American Van Lines, we’ve been helping people move for over 90 years. Our expert moving guides provide advanced tips and tricks to make sure you’re well-prepared for every eventuality. Whether you’re moving with pets, family or children, we have you covered. Interstate Moving FAQs

What is an interstate move?

An interstate move is a relocation from one state to another. Such relocations are primarily regulated by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA).

How much does an interstate move cost?

Interstate moving costs vary widely. Moving the contents of a two-bedroom house 1,500 miles can cost anywhere from $4,000 to well over $10,000, depending on the services provided. However, the best way to budget for your interstate move is to get a personalized quote. Many factors influence relocation costs, including how much of the packing you opt to do yourself, whether you need storage and how far you’re traveling.

How long can I expect my interstate move to take?

Like the cost, the duration of every interstate move varies. Generally, moving across the country takes 2–5 business days.

Are your interstate moving services available anywhere in the country?

Yes! We have moving agents throughout the U.S. who can help with your interstate move, and we work with trusted third parties when necessary. You’ll always have local movers to help streamline your interstate relocation when you choose northAmerican.

What are the cheapest ways to move between states?

DIY is always the cheapest way to move cross-country, but saving money isn't everything. Moving is a physically and logistically daunting process. Professional movers handle the hard stuff for you, alleviating the stress of planning, packing and shipping your possessions across the country.
