What a Move to Cuba Has to Offer
Cuba, Missouri, is named after the island of Cuba. It was established in the mid-1800s during the construction of one of the nation’s railroads. Today, Cuba is located along Route 66, and the city was designated the Route's Mural City because of its Viva Cuba Outdoor Mural Project, which involved the commissioning and painting of 12 murals along Cuba's Route 66 corridor. Included as part of the Project are murals commemorating the visits of Bette Davis and Amelia Earhart to Cuba.
Route 66 has also been part of the continuing success of the Wagon Wheel Motel. This historic lodging space consists of a motel, collection of rental cottages and a cafe that have been a fixture along Route 66 since the 1930s.
Today, Cuba is a small city of 3,356 people. Cuba is largely Caucasian, but the city is also home to a small population of Hispanic, African American and Native American residents. According to Census estimates in 2000, the median household income in Cuba is $24,127 and the median family income is $30,069.
Though Cuba's per capita income is not especially high, the city is a wonderful place to live with many historic sites to explore, and residents here value its history. Among other attractions, Cuba is home to the Crawford County History Museum and to a Veterans Memorial with the names of more than 1,000 veterans.
Cuba's location along Route 66 means that tourism is a supporting factor in its economy. The 42-foot-high World's Largest Rocking Chair is located only four miles from Cuba and is a tourist stop along with Cuba's 12 murals. Those who live here embrace these attractions and Cuba’s important place in American history.
