What a Move to Show Low Has to Offer

Located along the Mogollon Rim in the White Mountains of Arizona, the town of Show Low is a short and scenic 3 and a half hour drive from Phoenix. It is situated at an elevation of 6,412 feet among the United States’ largest stand of Ponderosa pines. The town is the hub of the White Mountains and is known for its year-round tourism because of its mild weather. It is also an ideal place to raise a family and has a population of about 10,600 residents.

The town was established in 1870 and incorporated in 1953. Legend says the city received its strange name when a long grueling poker game took place between two settlers, Corydon E. Cooley and Marion Clark. During the card game, they concluded that there was not enough space for both of them in their shared settlement.

They decided the loser of the card game would move on. By all accounts, Clark stated, “If you can show low, you win.” C.E. Cooley turned up the deuce of clubs and replied, “Show low it is.” Because the city got its name by the turn of a card, the town’s main street was named "Deuce of Clubs."

Show Low serves as the regional trade and service center for the White Mountain area and offers many outdoor activities, including fishing, hiking, horseback riding, camping, bird watching and nearby winter skiing. You will enjoy its serene beauty and western heritage. There are many houses available in the area and year-round RV parks. The town boasts numerous boutiques, restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and specialty shops. The Show Low Unified School District includes grades K – 12.
