Planning a move to a new city or state? Simply moving across the street to a new neighborhood? No matter where life takes you next, you must also plan for a utility transfer. Utility transfers are a moving necessity that needs to be done timely to help you avoid service disruptions.

We created a North American Van Lines moving utilities checklist you can use to ensure your utilities are successfully transferred and set up before you move. Here's everything you need to know:

Organize a List of Current Utilities

The first thing you want to do is create a list of utilities you currently use and need to transfer. The common utilities include water, gas, and electric bills. You may also need to transfer your trash collection, internet, security services, or cable bill.

While creating this utility transfer list, also consider other memberships and subscriptions you use regularly. This way, you can switch your address or cancel them as well.

Research New Utility Service Providers

Once you create a list of utility services at your current home, you'll need to start looking into different providers that service your new home, condo, or apartment. Most of this research can be done online before moving out.

If you're unsure which provider services your new area, you can check your state's Public Utility Commission (PUC) for more information.

When to Notify Utility Providers

At least two weeks before your move-out date, contact your current utility providers and let them know you’re moving. Schedule your utilities to turn off the day after your official move-out date. This ensures you still have running water and electricity when the movers are packing and loading your belongings.

Arrange Water and Sewer Service with New City/County

Next, it's time to contact your new water and sewer service. You'll want to let the utility providers know the exact date you plan to move into your new home, as this will ensure you have running water the day you plan to move.

Depending on where and when you're moving, you may be required to set up an account on their website and send a deposit to complete the utility transfer.

What if I move into a HoA?

The first thing you want to do is check to see if utilities are included in your HOA. Most HOA fees include utilities like water, gas, and trash in the monthly HOA payment. However, if utilities are not included, they may have a set list of utility providers for you to choose from for your electricity, cable, or internet.

Pay the Remaining Balance and do a Final Reading

The last thing you want to do is pay your remaining balance before you move out. You may want to also do a final reading on the meter to ensure you aren't overcharged for utilities you didn't use.

Once you transfer utilities to your new address, you'll want to do a quick meter reading at your new home the day you move in. This will ensure you aren't accidentally overcharged for utilities during your first month.

FAQs about Transferring Utilities When Moving

Does the title company transfer utilities?

No, it's your responsibility to transfer utilities before you move out of your home. If you're buying a new home, the seller may help initiate the transfer process before moving in.

Can utility offices give me an average for the new house?

Utility offices can provide a city average for utilities but may not offer an average for the specific house or apartment you're moving into. The cost for utilities can vary from resident to resident, based on their lifestyle. So, the estimate may not be an accurate representation of cost.

Is it okay to have overlapping services for two houses?

You can have overlapping internet, electricity, and water services at two houses through the same utility provider. You should be able to easily manage each service in your online portal.

What if I forgot to transfer my utilities?

If you forgot to complete your utility transfer before you move out, you'll want to call your provider immediately. Your utility bill will continue to accrue the longer you wait, which can lead to hefty utility bills.
