The Women Who Keep America Moving: Tamara Matheson

Truck driving has been and continues to be a male-dominated profession. But that's slowly changing. This Women's History Month, we celebrate several standout women drivers, like Tamara Matheson of Lewis Movers in Toronto, who help us continually deliver excellent service to our valued clients.

While truck driving has been and continues to be a male-dominated profession, we know that here at northAmerican® we are uniquely privileged to be home to several standout women drivers. In honor of Women’s History Month this March, we are excited to share the stories of the exceptional female drivers who help us continually deliver excellent service to our valued clients. Today, we get to hear from Tamara Matheson of Lewis Movers in Toronto. Tamara’s reputation of excellence is well-known throughout northAmerican®. As 2020’s runner-up for Driver of the Year, she brings her best to the job, the road, and to her clients every day.

1. What attracted you to the world of truck driving?

When I was young, I used to spend a lot of time on the road with my father. He could see how much I enjoyed seeing the world and encouraged me to try to do it for a living.

2. What is your favorite part of the job?

The most rewarding part of the job is seeing a satisfied customer at the end of a successful move. Plus being able to enjoy the scenery of the open road.

3. What do you wish more people knew about women truck drivers?

I wish more people knew about the level of responsibility that goes with being a long-distance driver and that there’s absolutely no reason that women can’t handle that responsibility every bit as well as a man.

4. Why do you think so few women still operate in this profession?

I think it might have to do with the time away from home and family. I am starting to see more and more women on the road and I think that’s fabulous.

5.  Do you have a female hero, and if so, who? And in what ways does she inspire you?

The first person that comes to mind is Betty White. She is funny, empowering, and I think, very inspirational.
