What a Move to Pittsburgh Has to Offer

As the second-largest city in Pennsylvania, Pittsburgh has a population of more than 305,000 people and serves as the county seat for Allegheny County. The city lies at the juncture of the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio Rivers. Pittsburgh is home to a large number of firms in the steel, aluminum, glass, transportation, electronics and petroleum industries. In the first half of the 20th century, it lagged only behind New York and Chicago for the number of people employed by corporate headquarters. Today, it boasts large numbers of people employed by Google, Apple, Disney, Bosch, Intel and IBM. The headquarters of Fortune 500 firms U.S. Steel, H.J. Heinz, PNC Financial Services, PPG Industries and WESCO International are all located in Pittsburgh, and the city offers 68 colleges and educational institutions, including Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh was the center of the French and Indian War of the late 1750s, and later, the British drove the French out of the area and held it until the American Revolution. In 1816, Pittsburgh was officially incorporated as a city. By 1857, it boasted more than 1,000 factories, producing brass, iron, tin and glass. Andrew Carnegie established steel mills that would later form the basis of U.S. Steel in the city in the late 19th century. By 1911, Pittsburgh was the eighth-largest city in America, producing up to half of its steel. Steel output rose to 95 million tons by World War II, and Pittsburgh's industrialization boomed until the early 1980s when high technology, healthcare and finance became the backbone of the city's economy.

Due in large part to the city's robust commercial success, many cultural and art institutions flourished. These include the Frick Art & Historical Center, The Carnegie Institute's Museums of Natural History and Art, Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall, Phipps Conservatory, PPG Aquarium and the Pittsburgh Zoo. The city also is home to Carnegie Science Center, the National Aviary, the Andy Warhol Museum, the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, the Mattress Factory art museum, Penn Brewery and the Allegheny Observatory.
