What a Move to Scarsdale Has to Offer

Scarsdale is a village and a town of roughly 17,000 residents in Westchester County, New York, that is roughly 25 miles from midtown Manhattan and that can be reached via the Metro-North Commuter Rail.

The village was established in 1701 when Caleb Heathcote, the 31st mayor of New York City, purchased land for an estate on the land of the present-day town and named it after his childhood home in Derbyshire, England. When he died, his daughters inherited the property, and in 1788, the town was incorporated.

During the American Revolution, British and American soldiers fought near what is today the intersection of Mamaroneck and Garden Roads. James Fenimore Cooper's Revolutionary War novel, "The Spy," was written in Scarsdale in 1821. After the war, the town's economy was substantially agricultural, but in 1845, the railroad arrived and brought a flow of commuters to the town.

In 1891, a company established one of the earliest single-family home developments in the region, and the town became decidedly suburban rather than rural with clubs and associations for the town's residents, including the Scarsdale Woman's Club, whose clubhouse at 37 Drake Road was built in 1858 and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Other listed historic sites in the town include Wayside Cottage, built in 1720 and once used as the town's public library; the Caleb Hyatt house, a home comprising two buildings built in the early 18th and 19th centuries; and Railroad Station, built in 1902 in a Tudor Revival style.

As a suburb of New York City, Scarsdale is mentioned frequently in plays, books, songs and films set in or near the city. The town hosts the Southern Westchester Food & Wine Festival in September, and numerous parks can be found in the area, including Saxon Woods Park and Hart's Brook Park and Preserve.
