What a Move to East Hampton Has to Offer

As the easternmost town in Suffolk County, East Hampton is well known for its unparalleled sea views, picturesque lighthouses and quaint harbor communities. Village East Hampton and hamlets Montauk, Amagansett, Wainscott, and Springs make up the population centers of this bucolic peninsula, along with a portion of the village of Sag Harbor.

Although East Hampton is today almost entirely a residential community, in the past, the military has had a significant presence here, with the Army, Navy and Air Force all having bases. George Washington authorized construction of the famous Montauk Lighthouse, the first lighthouse in America and the first American public works project after the country's founding. Today the Coast Guard maintains a station in East Hampton, and in the past pirates (including Captain Kidd) plied the town's waters.

East Hampton has long been a destination of the rich and famous, from presidents to artists, and well-known figures such as Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Mark Rothko, Leo Castelli, Andy Warhol and Dick Cavett have had houses here (many were summer or second homes). East Hampton real estate is some of the most expensive property in the world, but despite this, a small working-class population still calls the town home.

East Hampton has aggressively enforced bans on big box and chain stores in order to preserve its rural and residential character. In 2006, the town adopted a "dark skies" policy to discourage light pollution for environmental reasons and for the protection of wildlife. The town's annual July 4 fireworks display was postponed until Labor Day in 2005 to prevent disruption to the mating activities of the endangered piping plover shorebird. Since then, this has become a permanent tradition.

Every summer, the town hosts an Artists and Writers Softball Game charity event, and past participants have included Norman Mailer, Kurt Vonnegut, John Irving, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Simon and former President Bill Clinton. In October, the Hamptons International Film Festival draws crowds from New York City.
