What a Move to Jerseyville Has to Offer

Jerseyville is a city in and the county seat of Jersey County, Illinois, with roughly 8,500 residents. It was established in 1827 by James Faulkner, a settler from Pennsylvania who built a structure known as "The Little Red House," which served as a tavern, stagecoach station, school and bank for the area. Two New Jersey residents, John Lott and Edward Daly, surveyed the region, and they marked the beginning of an influx of businessmen and merchants from their home state. At a local meeting, residents decided to incorporate the city using a name that reflected their origin, and the name Jerseyville was chosen.

The Alton & Chicago Railroad brought industry and commercialization to the community. From 1880 to 1916, the majority of the buildings in the city's Downtown Historic District along State Street were built, including the Jersey County Courthouse, a 124-foot-tall limestone Romanesque Revival-style building designed by Henry Elliott, built in 1893. The Courthouse resembles other county courthouse buildings he designed in Illinois, and today it is listed on the National Register of Historic places. Today, residents in Jerseyville live among historic buildings and architecture, including the Jerseyville Public Library, a Georgian-style library, built in 1904, and the First Baptist Church, a classical revival church built in 1916.

History buffs interested in 1800s quaint rural life can explore the the Col. William H. Fulkerson Farmstead, a historic farm located at 1510 North State Street. Featuring an Italian Villa-style farmhouse with a tower and mansard roof, barn and carriage house, this farmhouse dates to 1872. Another historic farmstead in the city is the Fisher-Chapman Farmstead, built in 1867, which also features a charming Italianate facade.
