Packing and Loading

With the logistics settled, it’s time to get a move on! We aim to make your big day as seamless and stress-free as possible. Your northAmerican Driver and Packer do more than drive the moving truck and fill in the moving boxes. Our Drivers and Packers are professional movers in every sense of the word. If you wish, they’ll handle all aspects of physically moving your belongings.

This includes:

  • Preparing a detailed inventory of items to be moved
  • Using protective coverings to protect your home and belongings
  • Labeling all moving boxes and each piece of furniture with coded stickers to ensure nothing is unaccounted for
  • Loading your properly packed and inventoried moving boxes and items into the moving truck
  • Providing a bill of lading (a shipping contract) authorizing the transport of your possessions
  • Finally, safely delivering your belongings to your new home

If you cannot be present at the time of loading, you’ll need to arrange for a responsible person to act as your agent in signing both the bill of lading and the inventory list. (See our detailed explanation of the terminology used in the moving process).

Inventory/Paperwork

Your Driver will prepare a detailed Inventory & Condition Report of the items you wish to move. In addition to tagging every box, crate, or piece of furniture with numbered and color-coded labels, our professional movers will record each item and provide a description of any existing damage on the inventory form. You should accompany the Driver as they prepare the inventory, pointing out any special concerns or handling considerations along the way.

You’ll be asked to sign the inventory as your acknowledgment that the pieces indicated were loaded and their condition verified before moving. The Driver will sign the form as well and present you with a copy. Keep this inventory with you for use at your new home.

The Driver also will ask you to sign a bill of lading. This is the contract by which you authorize North American Van Lines to transport your possessions and agree to pay for those moving services. The bill of lading confirms the moving services to be performed, pickup and delivery schedules, and the valuation and protection plan you’ve selected.

Delivery of Your Possessions

Contact your Move Coordinator as soon as you arrive in your new hometown to confirm the final moving arrangements. The Driver will contact you a minimum of 24 hours before their expected arrival to confirm delivery arrangements.

When your shipment arrives, you can help expedite the unloading process by having a room-by-room floor plan in mind. Let the Driver and crew of professional movers know where you want moving boxes and other items placed as they’re unloaded and brought into your home. The Driver and movers will reassemble any items they disassembled before shipment.

As your belongings are brought in, check each item’s sticker against its corresponding entry on the check-off sheet, noting its condition. If an item is missing or appears to have been damaged in transit, make a note on the inventory, including the Driver’s copies, and notify your Move Coordinator.

Payment

Unless approved billing or credit arrangements have been made in advance, the Driver is required by law to collect payment for your household move before your shipment can be unloaded. If your shipment was placed in storage, charges up to that point are due at that time.

Payment must be made in cash or by cashier’s check, travelers’ checks, or money order payable to North American Van Lines. Many agents also accept credit cards. Personal checks cannot be accepted. A copy of the bill of lading signed by the Driver will be your receipt.

Unpacking

Your Move Coordinator will arrange to unpack moving boxes at the time of delivery, in addition to removing used packing materials and moving supplies from your new home. Should you choose to unpack your cartons yourself, you’ll be responsible for disposing of empty moving boxes, moving supplies, and other used materials.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a residential move typically cost?

The cost of a residential move can vary significantly depending on several factors, such as the distance of the move, the size of your household, the time of year, and the services you require. The best way to get an accurate estimate would be to complete our quote-on-demand form for instant pricing.

How far in advance should I start planning my move?

It's a good idea to start planning your move as early as possible to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience. Here are some general guidelines for when to begin planning your move:

  • Local move: For a move within the same city or a short distance away, it's recommended to start planning at least 4 to 6 weeks. This will give you enough time to research moving companies, gather packing materials, and start organizing and decluttering your belongings.
  • Long-distance move: If you're moving across the country or over a long distance, it's best to begin planning at least 8 to 12 weeks. Long-distance moves require more coordination, and you'll need time to make travel arrangements, research moving companies, and prepare your belongings for the move.
  • Peak moving season: If you're planning to move during the peak moving season, which typically runs from May to September, it's best to start planning even earlier, as moving companies tend to book up quickly during this time. Aim to plan at least 12 weeks for a move during peak season.

What is a House Cooling Party?

With a house-cooling party (essentially the opposite of a house-warming party), you can empty your fridge and bar cart, enlist some loved ones to help you pack (just a little!), and bid them adieu all at once

Remember that these are general guidelines, and your specific circumstances may require more or less time to plan your move. The key is to start early to avoid last-minute stress.
